Privacy

This site is run by John Kim as an individual, in Singapore. This page says what happens to information when you visit. It is written to be read, not to be survived.

Short version: there is no account to create, no newsletter, no contact form and no login. Visitor measurement here sets no cookies. The one thing that does set cookies is advertising, and that is covered below.

Visitor measurement

This site uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to count page views and see which pages people read and where they arrived from.

It sets no cookies, stores nothing in your browser, and does not fingerprint your device. It cannot follow you to other sites, and it does not build a profile of you. Visitors in the EU are not measured at all.

This site also uses Independent Analytics, a WordPress plugin, to see how long pages are read. It records the pages viewed and for how long, where visitors arrived from, any search made on this site, and their country, city, browser, operating system and type of device. It sets no cookies and does not store your IP address. It uses the address for a moment to work out your country and city. To tell visitors apart, it keeps a scrambled code made from the address and your browser details, and that code changes every day. Its records are kept in this site’s own database and its backups, and the plugin sends them nowhere else. Visitors in Europe and the EU are not measured by it.

Google Analytics is not used on this site.

Advertising

This site shows ads through Google AdSense. Google and its partners use cookies and similar technologies to serve ads and measure them, and those cookies can be used to show you ads based on your visits to this and other sites.

You can control this. Google’s own settings are at myadcenter.google.com, and industry-wide opt-outs are at optout.aboutads.info and youronlinechoices.eu. Your browser’s own cookie settings work too.

If you are in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland, you will see a consent message before personalised ads are served, and you can change or withdraw that choice at any time.

Email you send me

If you email john@smallbizsg.com, I receive your message, your email address, and whatever else you choose to put in it. I use it to reply to you and nothing else. I do not add you to any list, and I do not pass it to anyone.

Mail is hosted by Hostinger, which means their servers handle it in transit and in storage.

The author photo

The illustrated photo beside posts is served by Gravatar, a service run by Automattic. It is tied to a hashed version of my email address, not yours. Your browser fetches the image from Gravatar’s servers, which means Gravatar can see your IP address and browser details when a page loads — the same as for any image hosted elsewhere.

Hosting and security

The site is hosted by Hostinger and served through Cloudflare. Both keep standard server logs — including IP addresses — to deliver the site, and Cloudflare uses them to block attacks and abusive traffic. I do not use those logs to identify individual readers.

Links to other sites

Pages here link to government sites, banks, software providers and other businesses. Once you follow a link, that site’s own privacy policy applies, not this one. Some links are affiliate links — see Disclosure.

Your choices

  • Ads: use the consent message when it appears, the opt-outs above, or your browser settings.
  • Measurement: neither Cloudflare Web Analytics nor Independent Analytics has anything to opt out of, because neither stores anything in your browser or identifies you. Blocking JavaScript stops both.
  • Email: ask me to delete an email you sent and I will, unless I am required to keep it.

Under Singapore’s Personal Data Protection Act you may ask what personal data I hold about you, ask for it to be corrected, and withdraw consent for its use. Email the address above.

Children

This site is written for adults running or starting businesses. It is not directed at children and I do not knowingly collect information from them.
